One of the Character Strengths of our Positivity Project at South Elementary is 'Teamwork'. Students at all grade levels were nominated for being 'team players' and helping others excel in the classroom.

This week's staff spotlight is on our South Elementary secretary, Mrs. Shari Giles. Mrs. Giles is an IHS graduate. She has worked in our building for the last 16 years. Mrs. Giles enjoys camping and hiking with her husband and spending time with her four grandchildren. She also loves football and her favorite teams are the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions. When you call South Elementary or enter our office, Mrs. Giles is usually the first smiling face that you will see.

Kindergarten is engaged in learning all about the keyboard this week. They are so excited to begin learning where their letters are at on the keyboard! They will be working through keyboarding lessons that include finger dexterity to prepare them for typing with home row as they progress through school.

Thank you so much to the Ithaca Transportation Department for sharing safety practices with us today! We appreciate you❤️

Earlier this week, South Elementary students had a visit from Chief Nelson, Firefighter Joe Vozar, and Sparky, all from the Ithaca Fire Department. They talked with students about making a plan with their families about how to get out of their home in case of a fire and what firefighters wear and do to keep people safe. We are so fortunate to have a wonderful community fire department that invests in our school. Each child received a bag of goodies and a firefighter hat from the IFD. Thank you!!

Happy Homecoming Day to us (Miss Knight's class)! We won “Mr. Dusty” which means we had the cleanest room in the school for the whole week!

This week, our staff spotlight is on Mrs. Lombard. She is a paraprofessional at South Elementary. When she is not at school, Mrs. Lombard loves spending time with her four grandkids and family. A few fun facts about Mrs. Lombard: She attended kindergarten through sixth grade at South Elementary, she lives in the house that she grew up in, and summer is her favorite time of the year.

Mr. Whitford's classroom had some "Big Brothers" visit their siblings today in recognition of Homecoming week!
We want to thank all the Ithaca football players and cheerleaders for sharing their day with us! Have a great Homecoming tomorrow! GO TEAM!

Today was "Dress up as something that begins with the same letter as your name!" Kindergarten students in Mrs. Simcox's class (and families!) we're SO creative!

Thursday is Battle of the Classes at South!

Mrs. Whitford's class created their own firefighter gear in celebration of Fire Safety Week. Thank you Alley T and The Commission on Aging for your generous donations of new, unused items just right for our youngest engineers!

Wednesday is 'Nerd Day' at South.

Tuesday is Scrabble Day at South. Dress up as something that starts with the same letter as your name.

Monday is Pajama Day at South!

Kindergarteners read a story about friends trying to make leaves fall from trees today and were challenged to build and test their own "leaf grabbers". They were all actively engaged in this hands-on task!

After learning a bit about apple cider presses, kindergarteners pretended to make their own presses. Partners collaborated to turn a marble "apple" into apple cider as it traveled through their newly designed magnet maze.

This week's staff spotlight is on Mrs. Amy Hindbaugh-Marr. Students at both North and South Elementary are fortunate to learn with Mrs. Hindbaugh-Marr in her STEAM classroom. STEAM stands for: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. When Mrs. Hindbaugh-Marr is not teaching engaging lessons in her classroom, she enjoys attending Detroit Tigers baseball games with her family.

Mrs. Simcox's Kindergartners celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day by participating in apple art, apple tasting, apple graphing, and listening to several apple stories! Although the red delicious variety won the class vote, students loved all of the yummy flavors!

Today was our first day of NWEA testing (Language Arts). This is a national online test that students take 3 times a year (September, January, May). I was SO proud of these amazing kindergarten students. They used a mouse, listened carefully, clicked, and dragged. Adults are not allowed to help with answers, so these learners did this by themselves. We will do our math testing in a couple of days.
Way to go kindergarten kiddos!
