South students have engaged in learning about their digital footprints and standing up for others in our digital citizenship curriculum this year. When standing up for others students learned it is important to include everyone during our activities in the classroom, on the playground, and at home. By standing up for others we make everyone feel cared about and important; kindness is key.
Our students also learned about the online tracks we leave behind when we are playing games and visiting websites online. They can identify the difference between a website that is just right, and when they need to get an adult to help them if the website is safe or to find a new one that will be safe.

On behalf of the Board of Education, I thank the Ithaca Public Schools’ voters for their support of the renewal of the sinking fund. Approval of the sinking fund will allow the school district to continue to update facilities, improve school security, upgrade technology, and purchase new buses and vans.

This week in Tech, we are focusing on Digital Citizenship. Students have been engaging in activities at school to practice their DC skills. Monday's focus was media balance, and Tuesday's focus was staying safe online. Second graders learned about heat changes with a fun story called The Ice Cream Vanishes! They then collaborated to create puppet shows depicting the three heat-based changes the ice cream experienced.

This week our staff spotlight is on our school social worker, Ms. Alexis Bahr. Ms. Bahr enjoys spending time with family and friends, spending time with her two dogs, and reading in her free time.
Mr. Whitford's classroom enjoyed taste testing apples!
We were learning Math skills using tally marks with our recorded votes.
We also practiced our writing skills while journaling about our favorite flavored apple.
After reading a story about a leaf blowing into a barn and causing all sorts of problems for the animals, our young engineers designed latches for "barn doors". In order to create designs that allowed the paper doors to open and shut, students found clever ways to use marker caps, pipe cleaners, straws, and twist ties! Problem solving at its finest!
For a few hours yesterday, it looked as if winter had arrived at South Elementary! Our kindergarteners were thrilled to have the chance to work together and be creative in the snow!
First graders created brooms for all of the characters in the story Room on the Broom. Lots of Halloween creativity on display!
This week, our Positivity Project Character Strength was Creativity. Look at all the creative work kids have been doing at South!
Students in Mrs. Simcox's Kindergarten had a busy and fun half day of school! Library, centers, recess, and learning a new song, "The Monster Mash!"
Students in Mrs. Gulick's 2nd grade class used the character strengths of open- mindedness, curiosity, and creativity to make creatures out of base ten blocks!
Second graders read a story about a skeleton who kept falling apart and then constructed skeletons using dazzlinks. It was great to see the unique ways the pieces were used!
First graders practiced their coding and collaboration skills while testing out some new technology in STEAM this week.
One of the Character Strengths of our Positivity Project at South Elementary is 'Teamwork'. Students at all grade levels were nominated for being 'team players' and helping others excel in the classroom.
This week's staff spotlight is on our South Elementary secretary, Mrs. Shari Giles. Mrs. Giles is an IHS graduate. She has worked in our building for the last 16 years. Mrs. Giles enjoys camping and hiking with her husband and spending time with her four grandchildren. She also loves football and her favorite teams are the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions. When you call South Elementary or enter our office, Mrs. Giles is usually the first smiling face that you will see.
Kindergarten is engaged in learning all about the keyboard this week. They are so excited to begin learning where their letters are at on the keyboard! They will be working through keyboarding lessons that include finger dexterity to prepare them for typing with home row as they progress through school.
